Abstract

English
This study has focused on lexicographical research with a view to determining the needs of the Afrikaans lexicography with regards to a Romance language such as Italian. A bilingual technical dictionary is not available in Afrikaans and Italian, and neither is a general learners' dictionary aimed at learning the two specified languages. Adopting a more general perspective with regards to bilingual lexicography, the focus has fallen on a bilingual, technical-lexicographical subject as a concise, practical example. The purpose was to generate criteria in a field of research that has not yet been explored. The study clearly shows that a bilingual lexicographical work between Afrikaans and Italian should indeed be encouraged. Obstacles have been identified and possible solutions generated which may serve as a basic proposal and point of departure for future and more market-orientated lexicographical projects between Afrikaans and English.
