Abstract
English: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and psychological well-being of adolescents, while gender and culture were also taken into account. The research was grounded in Positive Psychology. Sense of coherence, satisfaction with life and affect balance, as criterion variables were used to examine psigological well-being, while emotional intelligence (intra- and interpersonal relationships, adaptability and stress management) was the predictor variable. The study consisted of 482 grade 10 and 11 learners in the greater Bloemfontein area. The BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory (BarOn EQ-i) was used to determine the emotional intelligence and the psychological well-being was investigated with the Sense of Coherence Questionnaire(SOC), the Satisfaction with Life Questionare (SWLS) as well as the Affectometer 2 (AFM2). The participants indicated low levels of a sense of coherence and only seems to be slightly satisfied with life. A positive relationship was found between intrapersonal relationships and satisfaction with life and intrapersonal relationships and affect balance. A negative relationship was found between affect balance and interpersonal relationships and affect balance and adaptability. Psychological wellbeing was not influenced by culture, while gender had a significant effect on affect balance, however this was of little practical significance. Interpretations were made according to these findings. Certain limitations of the study were indicated and recommendations were made.
Afrikaans: Die verband tussen emosionele intelligensie en psigologiese welstand van adolessente: ’n multikulturele ondersoek. Die doel van die studie was om die verband tussen emosionele intelligensie en psigologiese welstand by adolessente te ondersoek, terwyl geslag en kultuur ook verreken is. Die Positiewe Sielkunde is as begronding vir dié studie gebruik. Psigologiese welstand is in terme van koherensiesin, lewenstevredenheid en affekbalans ondersoek, dit wil sê kriteriaveranderlikes, terwyl emosionele intelligensie (intra- en interpersoonlike verhoudings, aanpasbaarheid en stresbestuur) as voorspellerveranderlike gedien het. Die ondersoekgroep het uit 482 graad 10 en 11 leerders uit die groter Bloemfontein-area bestaan. Emosionele intelligensie is met behulp van die BarOn emosionele intelligensievraelys (BarOn EQ-i) gemeet, terwyl psigologiese welstand met behulp van die koherensiesinvraelys (SOC), lewenstevredenheidvraelys (SWLS) en die affektometer (AFM2) bepaal is. Uit die resultate is dit duidelik dat die huidige ondersoekgroep lae vlakke van koherensiesin ervaar met slegs ’n geringe mate van lewenstevredenheid. ’n Positiewe verband is aangedui tussen intrapersoonlike verhoudinge en lewenstevredenheid en intrapersoonlike verhoudinge en affekbalans. ’n Negatiewe verband is egter tussen affekbalans en interpersoonlike verhoudinge en affekbalans en aanpasbaarheid gevind. Kultuur het geen beduidende bydrae gelewer ten opsigte van hierdie ondersoekgroep se psigologiese welstand nie, terwyl geslag slegs ’n betekenisvolle bydrae ten opsigte van affekbalans gelewer het. Hierdie bevinding was egter van geringe praktiese waarde. Sekere interpretasies is ten opsigte van die bevindinge gegee. Die sterktes en leemtes van die studie is aangedui en sekere aanbevelings is gemaak.
