Abstract
English: Sport Psychology is still a relatively young field in South Africa, especially when it comesto development programmes aimed at the development of sportsmen and -women in general, and motivation in specific. The aim of this study is to contribute in this regard to the developinging of a scientifically-based motivation program. Sportsmen and -women's need for high level functioning (physically and psychologically) points to the need for specialised development in the world of sport. It is on this terrain where the (Sport)psychologist can become involved. Through Psychology's endeavour to develop, among other things, the potential of individuals and groups, it is possible to integrate the terms "development" and "sport", enabling sportsmen and -women to function and perform at a higher level. The world of sport is an arena where human development (sportsmen and -women) occurs and provides individuals with the opportunity to stimulate their physical, social and cognitive development. The goal of this study is to enhance the performance of sportsmen and -women within the broader context of motivation. To realise and utilise the potential of sportsmen and-women, as well as reaching goals and the accompanying performance, the factors that influence motivation and aspects of motivation to include in the motivation program, were researched. The broad concept of motivation, the different theories on motivation, concepts related to the enhancement (development) of motivation and the implications thereof, were discussed. The contents of the development programme are based on the cognitive, humanistic, behaviouristic and existential-phenomenological approaches. With Psycho-development and the General Systems theory as point of departure, it was shown that the content of a development programme, and specifically a motivation programme, should focus on the generating of energy between the different systems and subsystems, which can be directed to, and utilised for the successful completion of the cybernetic cycle. Motivation is the natural result of the processes of human development in the broad, and cybernetic functioning in specific. The developmental consultant involves himself on different (systemic) levels, namely individuals, groups, or teams, intergroups, organisations or larger social systems (Kelly, 1981). The Model for Development (Schoeman, 1983) implies that the challenge is to become involved on different levels of complex systems. The developmental consultant is involved in the training of skills, competencies and insights by using different categories of methods. Above mentioned aspects were included in the respective components of the cybernetic, creating a climate leading to the functioning of systems in general, and specifically motivation, on a higher level. The clockwise functioning of the motivation cycle, on which the programme is based, leads to the reaching of set goals, competence motivation (Cox, 1990) and performance motivation. This process implies intrinsic motivation, and motivation in general, on a higher level. This study succeeded in: * providing a framework for the development programme, * applying literature on a motivation programme for rugbyplayers, * and evaluating the program in the sense that it complies, to a great extent, to the criteria the literature dictates.
Afrikaans: In Suid-Afrika lê die terrein van Sportsielkunde tans nog braak in terme van ontwikkelingsprogramme gerig op die ontwikkeling van sportlui in die breë en motivering in die besonder. Hierdie studie het ten doelom by te dra tot die vul van hierdie leemte deur 'n wetenskaplik-gefundeerde motiveringsprogram te ontwikkel. Sportlui se behoeftes aan 'n hoë vlak van funksionering (fisiese en sielkundige vaardighede en voorbereiding) dui onder andere op 'n behoefte aan ontwikkeling en gespesialiseerde ontwikkeling in die sportwêreld. Dit is op hierdie terrein waar die (Sport)sielkunde verder betrokke kan raak. Uit die Sielkunde se strewe om onder andere die potensiaal van die mens en groepe te ontwikkel, is dit moontlik om die twee begrippe "ontwikkeling" en "sport" te integreer ten einde sportlui in staat te stelom op 'n hoër vlak te presteer. Die sportwêreld is 'n arena waarin ontwikkeling van die mens (sportmens) plaasvind en bied onder andere aan die mens die geleentheid om sy/haar fisiese, sosial e en kognitiewe ontwikkeling te stimuleer. Die oorhoofse doelstelling van hierdie verhandeling is om die prestasie van sportlui te verhoog binne die konteks van die breër konsep van motivering. Ten einde sportlui se potensiaal te herken en te benut, sowel as die bereiking van doelwitte en die daarmee gepaardgaande prestasie, is 'n ondersoek geloods na die faktore wat 'n invloed op die motivering van die sportman/-vrou het en watter aspekte van motivering in die motiveringsprogram ingesluit moet word. Die breë konsepte van motivering, die verskillende motiveringsteorieë, konsepte wat verband hou met die verhoginge ontwikkeling) van motivering en die implikasies daarvan vir die verhoging (ontwikkeling) van motivering is bespreek. Die inhoud van die ontwikkelingsprogram is gebaseer op die kognitiewe, humanistiese, behavioristiese en eksistensieel-fenomenologiese benaderings. Met Psigo-ontwikkeling en die Algemene Sisteemteorie as vertrekpunt, is aangetoon dat die inhoud van 'n ontwikkelingsprogram, en 'n motiveringsprogram in die besonder, moet fokus op die generering van energie tussen verskeie sisteme en subsisteme wat aangewend kan word vir die suksesvolle voltooiing van die kubernetiese siklus. Uit menslike ontwikkeling in die breë en uit die kubernetiese funksionering in die besonder, kom motivering as uitvloeisel van hierdie prosesse na vore. Die ontwikkelingskonsultant moet noodwendig betrokke raak op verskillende (sisterniese) vlakke, nl. individue, groepe of spanne, intergroepe, organisasies en groter sosiale sisteme (Kelly, 1981). Die saamgestelde praktykmodel (Schoeman, 1983) impliseer juis dat die uitdaging daarin geleë is om op verskeie vlakke van komplekse sisteme betrokke te raak. Die psigo-opleier (ontwikkelaar)/ontwikkelingskonsultant raak dus betrokke by die opleiding in vaardighede, bevoegdhede en insigte deur van 'n verskeidenheid van kategorieë van metodes gebruik te maak. In die motiveringsprogram is al die bogenoemde aspekte ingesluit by die onderskeie komponente van die kubernetiese siklus ten einde die nodige klimaat te skep waar sisteemfunksionering in die breë en motivering in die besonder, op 'n hoër vlak kan plaasvind. Die kloksgewyse funksionering van die motiveringsuklus waarop die motiveringsprogram gebaseer is, lei tot die bereiking van gestelde doelwitte, 'n gevoel wat Harter bevoegdheidsmotivering noem (Cox, 1990) en prestasiemotivering (Gill, 1986). Hierdie proses impliseer intrinsieke motivering, en motivering in die geheel, op 'n hoër vlak. In hierdie studie is daar geslaag om: * 'n raamwerk vir die ontwikkelingsprogram daar te stel, * die literatuur toe te pas op 'n motiveringsprogram vir rugbyspelers, * en die program te evalueer deurdat dit tot 'n groot mate voldoen aan die vereistes wat die literatuur stel.
