Sparring with the wind: an immersive gap year settlement in the Geelkrans Nature Reserve

Adventure camp architecture acts as both a shelter and the medium between the nomad and the landscape, temporarily influencing the adventurer’s experience and perception. Existing adventure camp typologies often implement social principles but not to the extent that they incorporate the sensitivity of the coastal context. The proposed project rigorously examines the relationship between the temporality of the coastal landscape and the structural manifestation thereof. It delves into the profound influence of wind in sculpting the physical and existential reflection of the nomad. The transiency of the coastal landscape of Stilbaai where its myriad manifestations are explored, and a gap year camp emerges as a focal point. Through this lens, a new perspective emerges on architectural discourse - one that embraces change and impermanence, fostering a profound connection between humanity and its ever-evolving environment.
