| dc.description.abstract | The purpose of the present study was to determine the standard and the nature of film reviews in South Africa. This was done in two phases: Firstly the general requirements and functions of film reviews were established in a qualitative analysis of the existing literature on the film as art form and as a medium of communication. Based on the review of literature, an original model of film production and distribution and film reviewing as a multistaged communication process, was also constructed. In the second phase a number of South African film reviews were analysed quantitavely on three levels in order to compare these reviews to the general requiremenets and functions identified from the literature. The literatura indicated a marked distinction between film reviewers and film critics. It also identified the major errors which can be made in the reviewing of films. Both the distinction between the two types of film reviewers and the major review errors were found to be present in the analysis of South African film reviews. It was concluded that there were both sufficient theoretical background and enough scope for practical application available to reviewers to improve the standard of/their reviews. Finally, a number of proposals were put forward on how to attain a general improvement in the techniques, nature and standards of film reviews. | en_ZA |
