Intended as a means of preparing students from historically black high schools for tertiary admission and to facilitate their transition to tertiary education, the Career Preparation Programme (CPP) has been in operation at the University of the Orange Free State since 1993. This paper reports the results of an investigation into the long-term effectiveness of rhe CPP. It compared various indices of academic
performance of the 1993 and 1994 intakes of CPP students with the corresponding indices of black students who were directly admitted co the UOFS in 1994 and 1995 respectively, taking into account group differences in previous academic [unclear text).
