What is wrong with current theorisations of ‘boredom’?

Abstract

English: This article examines theoretical attempts to focus attention on the much-neglected phenomenon of “boredom” and evaluate the extent to which the theorists succeed in illuminating it. It is argued that cognitively important aspects of boredom are ignored by these theorists and suggest ways in which such shortcomings in the treatment of boredom may be addressed in future studies.Afrikaans: Hierdie artikel ondersoek teoretiese pogings om aandag op die hoogs verwaarloosde fenomeen van “verveling” te vestig en te evalueer tot watter mate teoretici daarin slaag om dit te verhelder. Dit word geargumenteer dat bewussynsbelangrike aspekte van “verveling” deur hierdie teoretici geïgnoreer word en wyses word voorgestel waardeur sulke tekortkominge aangespreek kan word in toekomstige studies van “verveling”.
