The main argument of this study is that the establishment of the Azanian People’s Organisation (AZAPO) and its struggle for liberation in South Africa (SA) and Bloemfontein (Mangaung) was not unidirectional, as suggested by other liberation historians. Rather, the researcher argues that its existence was a consequence of dual agencies of repression and oppression, faced by many of the Black masses in South Africa. The study constructs its core argument in relation to the quiescence of academic literature on the role of AZAPO in the liberation struggle of SA, let alone places like Mangaung. In this study three main arguments are advanced in relation to the organisation’s existence and contribution to the struggle for liberation. These arguments are adumbrated in the subsequent chapters, constituting this study. The study also analyses why AZAPO in the Free State and especially in Mangaung has received little academic attention, as compared to other provinces and places. Furthermore, this study historicises the connections between how the regional structures of AZAPO identified with the rest of the country. To this end, AZAPO’s activities in the Free State are used to show the spread of the movement’s political might. To achieve this, a closer examination of archival materials and secondary sources presented in a narrative and chronological way, was undertaken. Through these sources, the movement’s planned activities and mobilisation in the Free State, with specific focus on Mangaung, are highlighted.
