English: In this lecture LAAT-STYL BY J. S. BACH EN BEETHOVEN AAN DIE HAND VAN DIE “GOLDBERG” EN “DIABELLI” VARIASIES 'lateness' is examined as a concept via Adorno. Time and narrative are placed as the main elements in two of the greatest sets of variations in the piano repertoire. The lecture demonstrates similarities and differences between two very different compositions and the aesthetics of closure and ending. 'Lateness' is portrayed as inherently present in these works as a vehicle to illustrate the composers in their most mature utterances. The integrity of their musical language is shown to be realised by the relevant definition of 'lateness'. The lecture demonstrates the combination of performance and intellectualisation in a unique way and strives to combine the different disciplines as a balancing act and one in which both complement the other.
