Abstract

In this essay, we demonstrate that in addition to the Revised Standard Version and its revisions as part of the linear emergence of the Tyndaleโ€“King James Version tradition in the 20th and 21st centuries, there are also alternative revisions and retranslations of the ๐˜’๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜‘๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ (KJV) of 1611 as literal or word-for-word translations, which emerge as divergent branches. The revisions of the ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ ๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ (ASV) (1901) emerged in the following branches, namely the ๐˜•๐˜ฆ๐˜ธ ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ ๐˜‰๐˜ช๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ (NASB) and its revisions, ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜‰๐˜ช๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ (AB) and its revisions, as well as ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜“๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜‰๐˜ช๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ, Paraphrased and its retranslation, the ๐˜•๐˜ฆ๐˜ธ ๐˜“๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ (NLT). Then there are revisions that emerged as alternatives to the ๐˜™๐˜ฆ๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ ๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ (1946โ€“1952/1971) by reverting to the ๐˜’๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜‘๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜™๐˜ฆ๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ (Blayney) Edition (1769) as their incipient text rather than the ASV, namely ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜”๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฏ ๐˜’๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜‘๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ (MKJV) (and similar revisions), The ๐˜•๐˜ฆ๐˜ธ ๐˜’๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜‘๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ (NKJV) and the ๐˜•๐˜ฆ๐˜ธ ๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฃ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ ๐˜‰๐˜ช๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ. Finally, there are retranslations within the Tyndaleโ€“King James Version tradition, namely the ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜บ ๐˜Œ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฉ ๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ (CEV), and the ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜Œ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฉ ๐˜‰๐˜ช๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ (CEB). The diversity reflects the search for individual identity to satisfy particular reader expectations in an age of digital-media interpretive culture featuring broad universal values. ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป: Instead of viewing the revisions and retranslations within the Tyndaleโ€“King James Version tradition since the second half of the 20th century as new and independent, it is demonstrated that the various branches and their versions rather continue the emergence of the pre-20th century translation complex within this tradition to satisfy particular reader expectations.
