dc.description.abstract | The exceptional growth in the urban population of cities in developing countries has mandated a critical analysis of urban waste management practices. In the context of increasing urban population density, sanitary landfill solution is a lucrative means of waste disposal and attainment of an acceptable environmental quality and public health. The location of sanitary landfill facilities in established urban developments requires careful and thoughtful consideration to create a situation which accommodates the technological, social, economic and environmental considerations associated with landfill creation alongside existing infrastructure, social fabric and environmental constraints. This investigation contributes to the search for a suitable site for a new waste disposal facility to cater for the solid waste generated in Harare’s industrial, commercial and residential areas. This research takes the form of a land use suitability assessment with a multi-criteria analysis. Factors considered include settlement pattern, industrial areas, commercial areas, wetlands, transport routes, surface and groundwater vulnerability. Weights are assigned to these factors depending on their relative importance and impact as determined through literature, local authority regulations and responses of key decision makers and stakeholders. Using Geographic Information Systems (G.I.S,) map overlay techniques; alternative landfill sites are identified and evaluated. | en_ZA |
