| dc.description.abstract | English: This article argues that the legacy of the nineteenth-century Dutch statesman and theologian Abraham Kuyper merits renewed attention for the light it sheds on some topical economic issues of our time. Kuyper’s life and work (1837-1920) had a marked influence on the Dutch societal landscape and beyond, well into the twentieth century. He proposed an understanding of Biblical belief entailing an across-the-board understanding of how believers should live, with comprehensive and far-reaching effects. This study traces the implications of Kuyper’s views on faith and public life and his conception of sphere sovereignty, as well as the application of these ideas to the role of markets and governments and to economic development. | en_ZA |
| dc.description.abstract | Afrikaans: Hierdie artikel betoog dat die nalatenskap van die negentiende-eeuse Nederlandse staatsman en teoloog Abraham Kuyper hernieude aandag verdien vanweë die lig wat dit werp op netelige ekonomiese kwessies vandag. Die impak van Kuyper se lewe en werk (1837-1920) was omvattend binne en buite Nederland en het tot diep in die twintigste eeu geduur. Sy lewenstaak was om ’n begrip van Bybelse geloof te verkondig wat die lewensomspannende betekenis daarvan aan gelowiges verduidelik, asook hoe hulle met ’n omvattende en verreikende uitwerking daaruit kan leef. Hierdie bydrae spoor die implikasies na van Kuyper se siening oor geloof en die openbare lewe, sy konsep van soewereiniteit in eie kring, asook die toepassing van voorgaande op die rol van markte en die owerheid en in ekonomiese ontwikkeling. | af |
