| dc.description | This study examined the role of female characters regarding the development of families in Sesotho drama texts. It aimed at uncovering how females are presented in raising children, supporting their families, and their role in society in terms of language usage and actions in the drama texts Haeso Mafotholeng (2015) by C. Teleki and Malefane (2015) by P. Maake. The qualitative research method was utilised as being suitable to analyse data from written texts. In addition, content and thematic analysis approaches were pursued to understand female characters according to their role in raising families and in society. Purposive sampling was applied to select books that were suitable to describing female characters' participation in families and in society. The research utilised the Functionalist theoretical elements such as social order, stability, and productivity to explain the role of female characters in the selected drama texts. The study revealed that the writers, Teleki and Maake, present female characters who enact and verbalise their roles in a manner that develop families and society in general. This study filled the existing gap in knowledge by demonstrating how female characters raise families and enrich the Basotho society in general. The findings also revealed the need for continuous research regarding the subject of female characters' participation in families, especially from other genres such as stories, novels, and poetry. This study contributes to the field of literature through the Functionalist Perspective which enriches possibilities for future research in this area. | |
