    Translation studies and Bible translation
(Faculty of Theology, University of the Free State, 2000) Naude, J. A.
English: An overview of recent developments of the discipline that studies the activity of translation, as well as the implications for Bible translation, is presented. Starting off with a discussion on the name and content of the discipline, an overview of some translation approaches focusing on the source text, the process of translation, the reception of the translated text and the cultural-social bound character of translation, is offered. Since the early eighties there has been a tendency within translation studies to move away from the normative and prescriptive approaches to translation and to adopt a descriptive approach towards the study of translated literature. Descriptive translation theorists attempt to account not only for textual strategies in the translated text, but also for the way in which the translation functions in the target cultural system. The implications that these recent theoretical developments bare for Bible translation practice, criticism of Bible translations, the training of theologians and Bible translators are finally indicated.

Herderlike bediening aan die kind uit 'n egskeidingsgesin
(Faculty of Theology, University of the Free State, 2000) Van der Schyff, S. P.; Venter, C. J. H.
English: In this article special attention is paid to three aspects concerning the above mentioned theme. Firstly, basis-theoretical perspectives are developed on a child in a crisis situation. Secondly an investigation is undertaken on metatheoretical level on the child's unique emotional experience of the divorce of his or her parents. Aspects dealt with here are reactions of shock, grief, confusion, aggression, fear, feelings of guilt, loneliness, stress and feelings of inferiority. Finally, practicetheoretical guidelines are proposed for pastoral care to a child exposed to a divorce in his/her family. Special attention is paid to the functioning on a practical level of the pastoral basis attitude, the acts of listening to a child, Scripture reading, proclamation and prayer.

Capital punishment or capital forgiveness? The enduring message of Dead Man Walking
(Faculty of Theology, University of the Free State, 2000) Hale, Frederick
The best-selling book and internationally popular film Dead Man Walking address squarely the issue of capital punishment which has been extensively debated throughout much of the world and challenged the ethical thinking of Christian and non-Christian moralists. Although chis question is created in Dead Man Walking in an explicitly Roman Catholic context in the United States of America, the ethical and spiritual dimensions of its treatment on the screen transcend geographical and denominational borders and are particularly relevant co South Africa, where escalating violence in recent years has engendered a callousness and spirit of vengefulness in many quarters and where public support for the death penalty is strong.

Die sosiale konstruksie-model en die spanning tussen hoor en doen as reaksie op die prediking
(Faculty of Theology, University of the Free State, 2000) Kleynhans, D. J. B.; Kellerman, J. S.
English: Preaching is the occurrence of communication through which the gospel of Jesus Christ is made known to the world, in order co change people's lives. According to the social construction model each individual has an own constructed life story. This constructed life story acquires power over the individual, co such an extent that change cannot take place without deconstructing the life story. Deconstructing rhe life story or self-narrative leads to change. Thus the life story prevents the change that the preaching of the gospel wanes to bring about. Deconstruction is furthered through communication. Preaching the gospel must be utilised to lead the individual to communication with self and others. When preaching the gospel it is more important to ask the right questions, than giving the right answers. The right questions will stimulate the hearer to tell his/her own story. In doing so, his/her life story will be deconstructed and changed according to the preached word will take place.

Monotheistic understanding of the divine in African religion, Christianity and Islam
(Faculty of Theology, University of the Free State, 2000) Namukoa, E. W.; Verster, P.; Nel, P. J.
The article traces rhe varied expressions of the conception of the Divine in traditional African religion, Islam and Christianity. The focus in particular is on explaining the idea of monotheism in each of these religious traditions. An argument is advanced here that African religion, however different from Christianity and Islam, ultimately also manifests a form of monotheism. The rheological debate on the particular expressions of monotheism in Christianity and Islam also receive attention. Finally, a suggestion is put forward as co the possibility co exploit the commonality of the absolute position of the Divine in the religious traditions as a shared basis for religious tolerance and dialogue.
