While Coetzee’s analysis has lost none of its cognitive value a quarter of a century after its first publication in 1981, a psychoanalytical reading of verbal aspect as a symptom of paranoia will be attempted here. I wish to suggest, further, that this paranoid structure is potentially to be found at the heart of all language and subjectification.Afrikaans: In diesem Aufsatz versuche ich eine andere Lesart der Zeitstruktur von Kafkas letzter Novelle Der Bau vorzunehmen als die von J M Coetzee in dem Aufsatz ‘Time, tense and aspect in Kafka’s The burrow’. Während Coetzees Analyse nichts an Erkenntniswert ein viertel Jahrhundert nach seiner ersten Publikation im Jahre 1981 eingebüßt hat, schlage ich eine psychoanalytische Lesart vor, die den Gebrauch des Aspekts des Verbums in der Novelle als Symptom der Paranoia versteht.
