Abstract
Development practitioners around the world are now increasingly considering
participatory communication a principal component of development projects.
For that reason, this research has been conducted in-order to give a detailed review and comparison with regards to how Participatory Development Communication principles were conceived and employed all through the process, in the different project cycle phases. Through this investigation, it is anticipated that an insight about the implementation of participatory communication among community development NGOs in the specific context of contemporary Zimbabwe would be gained. Thus the research identifies implementing challenges and prospects of this social development medium Participatory Development Communication (PDC) using Malilangwe Trust (a wildlife conservation non-governmental organisation in Chiredzi,
Zimbabwe) as case study. The main intention is to ascertain ways of making a more realistic use of PDC in development initiatives and to advice other Malilangwe Trust projects with the hope also that the results might have an impact on other NGOs in Zimbabwe and elsewhere.
Thus, this dissertation argues that due to the fact that Participatory Development Communication is horizontal and people-centred in nature, it is an approach that is capable of facilitating the involvement of people in the decision-making process. When prudently employed, it is likely that PDC can facilitate "a new development" that is well able to address people's particular priorities and needs that are pertinent while on the other hand helping in empowering them.
