Abstract
English: After the Reformation and the Enlightenment there was a strong emphasis on the rational aspect of religion as well as on the pure preservation of it. This and the Aristotelian view on metaphor led to a devaluation of metaphor's role in the formation of spirituality. The recent changes in technology and culture is having definite implications on the way people's spirituality is formed and experienced. Nowadays people are less concerned with the subject-matter and more with the shape and experiencing of spirituality. They are looking for the significance of spirituality for everyday life. Metaphor is the medium of the electronic age and offers excellent possibilities for the formation of spirituality. Metaphor is an excellent medium for religion and puts spirituality and its significance back into the matters of everyday life. This study is an appeal to reinstate metaphor in its key position in the formation of spirituality It shows that metaphor had to make way for more logical and rational means in the transfer of spirituality. In a short overview on the term metaphor and its history, it is argued that metaphors are not optional literary devices, but that all understanding and knowledge are produced metaphorically. The essence of metaphor is that it gives one the opportunity to understand and experience one thing in terms of another. But metaphor does not only describe reality, it also shapes reality. It brings new understanding and involves the person in a process to integrate the metaphor in his life. In order to clarify the relationship between metaphor and spirituality, the metaphorical nature of spirituality is investigated. If spirituality is metaphorical, then it must be visible in the Bible as well as in the different christian denominations. The metaphorical nature of Old and New Testament spirituality is made clear. The study indicates that the spirituality of the different christian traditions is built on a selection of Biblical metaphors. The chosen metaphors are then interpreted contextually according to their doctrines and shaped into certain religious practices. Feminist spirituality e.g. is built on the metaphor of God as mother. Concerning the formation of spirituality it is argued that it is formed by the Holy Spirit in the practices in church and everyday life. The relationship between metaphors and spirituality is therefore clear. Because all knowledge and understanding are metaphorical, spirituality and its practise is metaphorical. Spirituality is formed via metaphors. Metaphors give spirituality the bridge between reality and the possibilities in Christ. Metaphors mediate spirituality and make it natural. The metaphors that are used, determine the spirituality that is practised. A lack of rich and varied metaphors leads to a one-sided and poor spirituality. In order for spirituality to grow and change, the metaphors at its roots must grow and change. Multiple metaphors pave the way to a balanced spirituality. In the second-last chapter practical examples are given of how metaphors can be used to build up people's spirituality. No special training is required, only an awareness of metaphor's capacity and some creative thinking. People love metaphors. It involves them and lends some playfulness to their understanding and experiencing of spirituality. The following conclusion therefore is reached: The metaphors with which a particular spirituality operates and the way metaphors are interpreted, will determine the shape of that spirituality. Metaphors can produce and communicate meaning and experience which is invaluable for the formation of spirituality. Metaphors determine our understanding of God and the way we live with God. For spirituality to change and grow, the metaphors at its roots must change and grow. Metaphor offers wonderful opportunities that must be utilised in the formation of people's spirituality!
Afrikaans: Na die Reformasie en die Verligting was daar enbaie sterk klem op die rasionele aspek van geloof en die suiwere bewaring daarvan. Dit en die Aristoteliaanse beskouing van metafore het gelei tot endevaluering van die plek van metafore in spiritualiteitsvorming. Die huidige verandering in tegnologie en kultuur het definitiewe implikasies vir die belewenis en vorming van mense se spiritualiteit. Mense is nou baie minder ingestelop inhoud en baie meer op vorm en ervaring; ook in spiritualiteit. Daar is ensoeke na die betekenis en belewenis van spiritualiteit in die praktyk van die alledaagse lewe. Metafoor is die medium van die elektroniese era en bied wonderlike geleenthede vir spiritualiteitsvorming. Metafoor is en uitstekende medium vir geloofsoordrag en plaas spiritualiteit en die belewing daarvan binne die konkrete alledaagse lewe. Hierdie studie is enoproep om metafore in hulle sleutelposisie in spiritualiteitsvorming te herstel. Daar word aangedui hoe metafore hulle deurslaggewende posisie in spiritualiteitsvorming moes afstaan aan meer logiese en rasionele maniere. In enoorsig oor die begrip metafoor en sy ontwikkelingsgeskiedenis word aangetoon dat metafore nie opsionele stylfigure is nie, maar dat alle kennis en verstaan op metafore berus. Die essensie van metafoor is dat dit die geleentheid bied om een saak in terme van 'n ander te verstaan en te ervaar. Metafore is nie net realiteitsbeskrywend nie, maar ook realiteitskeppend. Dit bring nie net nuwe verstaan nie, maar maak die persoon betrokke by 'n proses om die metafoor in sy lewe te integreer. Om die verband tussen metafore en spirituaHteitsvorming aan te dui, word die metaforiese aard van spiritualiteit ondersoek. As spiritualiteit metafories van aard is, moet dit in die Bybel en in die verskillende geloofstradisies sigbaar wees. Die metaforiese aard van Ou en Nuwe Testamentiese spiritualiteit word uitgewys. Daar word aangetoon dat die spiritualiteite van die verskillende denominasies opgebou is uit 'n seleksie vanuit die Bybelse metafore. Die gekose metafore word dan kontekstueel en vanuit die belydenisskrifte geïnterpreteer en . uitgebou tot sekere religieuse praktyke. Feministiese spiritualiteit word byvoorbeeld gebou op die metafoor van God as moeder. In die kerklike en alledaagse lewenspraktyke waarin metafore volop voorkom, vind spiritualiteitsvorming plaas deurdie werk van die Heilige Gees. Die verband tussen metafore en spiritualiteit is duidelik sigbaar. Omdat alle kennis en verstaan metafories van aard is, is spiritualiteit en die beoefening daarvan metafories van aard. Die vorming van spiritualiteit gebeur deur metafore. Metafoor gee aan spiritualiteit die brug tussen die werklikheid en die moontlikhede in Christus. Metafore maak spiritualiteit natuurlik; bemiddel dit. Die metafore wat gebruik word, is bepalend vir die aard van die spiritualiteit wat beoefen word. en Gebrek aan ryk metafore beteken en arm of eensydige spiritualiteit. Vir spiritualiteit om te groei en te verander, moet die metafore ten grondslag daarvan groei en verander. Meervoudige metafore verseker gebalanseerde spiritualiteit. Die laaste deel van die studie word daaraan gewy om praktiese voorbeelde te gee van hoe metafore in spiritualiteit benut kan word. Dit vra nie spesiale opleiding nie, net en bietjie kreatiwiteit. Mense geniet metafore. Dit maak hulle betrokke by wat gebeur en dra enspeelse element in tot die verstaan en belewing van hulle spiritualiteit. Die volgende gevolgtrekking word dus gemaak: Die metafore waarmee 'n sekere tipe spiritualiteit werk en die interpretasie daarvan, is bepalend vir die gestalte wat dit aanneem. Metafore kan belewenisse en betekenisse produseer en kommunikeer wat van onskatbare waarde is in spiritualiteitsvorming. Metafore bepaalons verstaan van God en ons leef voor God. Vir spiritualiteit om te groei en te verander, moet die metafore wat die grondslag daarvan vorm, groei en verander. Metafoor bied wonderlike geleenthede om te benut vir spiritualiteitsvorming!
