Abstract
Ontology has been defined as: The study of Being, with the purpose to determine the basic nature of everything. Three aspects have been distinguished in the being of works of art; namely - the question of origin - the question of normative being - the question of destiny. The origin of the work of art is to be found in the created possibility of being-a-work-of-art. This implies that a specific sphere has been created wherein works of art can function in a sovereign and dominant way. Should art be abused for theology, ethics, economy, social criticism, political propaganda, etc., the original structure for being art gets destructed and the very being of art gets degraded. The normative being of art relates to the way in which aesthetic norms are applied. This way of application is influenced by the artist's world view. Should the artist be in the vice of nihilism and profound pessimism, his work will breathe this senselessness, and on the other hand, the work of an artist believing in the absolute salvation brought to this world through Jesus Christ, should speak of this - not through its thematic contents, but through the way reality is depicted. The destiny of the work of art is the actualisation thereof by the receptor/spectator. In its very nature a work of art begs to be actualized - to be appreciated. It is the task and duty of the artist to create works of art that can be understood and works of art that display a balanced view of reality: neither only the excessively minor / negative / sinful side of reality, nor an overromanticised, or whatever, view of peality may be depicted by the responsible artist. The deepest sense and meaning of art is to praise God. This is not necessarily done by only depicting biblical scenes or moralistic stories - quite on the contrary! Art praises God by being ART. The Christian artist is an artist who adheres to the norms of art. This study has been done from a specific world view, and the prolegomena for this study was: God lives: He created and He created reality in a sensible manner. It has been given to man to discover this sensibility and sense-fullness in reality. Art and the making of works of art is one way by which man can fulfill his duties regarding the culture mandate God gave him. It may not be neglected. Lastly it should be stated that Christianity is no guarantee for 'true' or 'good' art, but it should also be stated that whoever tries to deny that sensibility can eventually only be found in God, will surely find themselves in a senseless impasse.
