Abstract
The aim of this study was to formulate a framework for consolidating support for learners who display inappropriate behaviour, in order to enhance learner attainment. Participants in this study acted as co-researchers according to the PALAR methodology. This study used a seven-chapter approach to investigating the possibility of providing learners with consolidated support, which required a joint effort by the relevant stakeholders to a) validate the need for formulating the envisaged framework; b) identify the main components necessary for the implementation of the framework; c) anticipate possible threats that may impede the successful implementation of the framework; d) explore the conditions conducive to the sustainability of the framework; and e) to monitor the application of the framework. Seemingly, the abolishment of corporal punishment and the promulgation of legislation that safeguards the well-being of children have led to an escalation of inappropriate behaviour by learners. So, through Ubuntu, as the foundation on which the framework was based, integrated support, which was driven by participatory action learning and action research, was proposed, to ensure that we all take responsibility and accept the challenge of building a humane and caring society by responding to the research question. I used literature to develop constructs that act as organising principles that guide the study to achieve its objectives. Data generated were analysed through the use of critical discourse analysis as advocated by Van Dijk. It was because of the tenets of Ubuntu that the study proposed strong collaboration, based on sound relationships, between stakeholders. Learners displaying inappropriate behaviour were provided with constructive behavioural support programmes, which were within the confines of pieces of legislation, to positively reinforce the exhibition of appropriate behaviour. Therefore, a framework that emphasises collaborative, multi-sectoral support to facilitate appropriate behaviour by learners, was suggested.
