Abstract
English: The purpose of the study was to describe patients’ experience of nursing care as an indicator of the quality of nursing care that they received. Patients evaluate the quality of nursing care according to their own experience and perceptions. A qualitative, phenomenological and contextual research was done to explore and describe fifteen patients’ experiences of nursing care. Data collection was done by means of in-depth interviews. In this study a positive experience of nursing care experience by the patients indicated patient satisfaction and therefore that quality nursing care was rendered. Negative experiences indicate that the patients were not satisfied with the nursing care and therefore quality nursing care was not rendered. The data was analysed according to the steps described by Tesch. The following characteristics that describe quality nursing care were identified: applicability, professional knowledge and competence, therapeutic environment, acceptability, accessibility and patient satisfaction. The respondents experienced the professional behaviour of nurses as well as their dedication in doing nursing procedures as positive. Communication and pain management that forms part of professional behaviour, were negatively experienced by most of the respondents. Accessibility was also positively experienced by the majority of the respondents. The therapeutic environment as part of quality care was experienced as both positive and negative by an equal number of respondents. Acceptability of nursing care was experienced as positive, meaning that quality nursing care was rendered. Respondents experienced applicability negatively due to the fact that they experienced that the personnel was short staffed. Respondents experienced that this lead to a high working load. The majority of respondents experienced patient satisfaction. It is indicated through this study that the experience of the patient of the most important role player in health care, the patient, could differ from the information obtained through questionnaires or surveys. This finding should not merely be ignored if rendering of quality care is an important focus of a company or department.
Afrikaans: Die doel van die navorsing was om pasiënte se belewenisse van hulle verpleegsorg as aanwyser van kwaliteit verpleegsorg te beskryf. Pasiënte evalueer kwaliteit van verpleegsorg na aanleiding van hul eie belewenisse en verwagtinge. ‘n Kwalitatiewe, fenomenologiese en kontekstuele navorsing is gedoen om vyftien pasiënte se belewenisse van verpleegsorg te verken en te beskryf. Datainsameling is deur middel van in-diepte onderhoude gedoen. In hierdie navorsing het ‘n positiewe belewenis van verpleegsorg op pasiënt tevredenheid en gevolglike lewering van kwaliteit verpleegsorg gedui. ‘n Negatiewe belewenis het daarop gedui dat die pasiënt nie met die verpleegsorg tevrede was nie en lewering van kwaliteit verpleegsorg is nie ervaar nie. Die data is aan die hand van die stappe, soos beskryf deur Tesch, gedoen. Die volgende kategorieë, wat die eienskappe van kwaliteit verpleegsorg beskryf, is geïdentifiseer: doeltreffendheid, professionele voorkoms en gedrag, terapeutiese omgewing, aanvaarbaarheid, toeganklikheid en pasiënt-tevredenheid. Professionele gedrag van die verpleegkundiges is positief beleef asook hulle toegewydheid in die uitvoering van verpleeg- prosedures. Kommunikasie en pynhantering wat onder professionele gedrag resorteer is deur die meerderheid van respondente as negatief beleef. Die toeganklikheid van die verpleegsorg is ook deur die meerderheid respondente positief beleef. Ten opsigte van ‘n terapeutiese omgewing was daar eweveel negatiewe en positiewe belewenisse rakende kwaliteit verpleegsorg. Aanvaarbaarheid van verpleegsorg is deur die meerheid respondente as positief, dit wil sê, kwaliteit sorg is gelewer, beleef. Respondente het egter doeltreffendheid negatief beleef, aangesien hulle ervaar het daar is ‘n personeel tekort wat ‘n hoë werkslading tot gevolg het. Die meerderheid respondente het pasiënt-tevredenheid beleef. Die navorsing het uitgewys dat die belangrikste rolspeler in gesondheidsorg, die pasiënt, se belewenis van wat kwaliteitsorg uitmaak, kan verskil van dit wat deur middel van algemene vraelyste ingewin word. Hierdie bevinding behoort nie sonder meer geïgnoreer te word indien die lewering van kwaliteit verpleegsorg ‘n belangrike fokus vir ‘n maatskappy of departement is nie.
