Item Open Access The psychological experience of resource-based learning (RBL) within the South African higher education context(University of the Free State, 2000) Holtzhausen, Somarie; Lategan, LaetusEnglish: South African higher education is currencly characterised by massification, globalisation, an increase in non-traditional students entering the system and a paradigm shift from lecture-based to resource-based education (RBL). During the transformation of the South African higher education system, RBL was proposed by the education ministry and in various policy documents as a mode of delivery which could meet the challenges of learners' expectations, the realities of the work place, and the need to maintain a high standard of graduates. Such an experience of change is difficult, due to its complexity and pace. In this article attention is focused on facilitators' and co-ordinators' psychological experiences of higher educational change in an RBL programme.Item Open Access Die rol van die intertaal by tweedetaalverwerwing(University of the Free State, 2000) Stander, MagdaEnglish: All speakers have a universal linguistic knowledge which they can apply to any language, making it possible for them to create a linguistic system or interlanguage. Such an interlanguage differs from the standardised form of the second language and can be seen as a variety thereof. Proficiency levels in the interlanguage of a speaker vary from pre-basic to char of a native speaker. Speakers use certain facilitating strategies but certain factors impede the creation of an interlanguage. Contrastive analysis is useful in explaining the origin of language errors while error analysis can increase our knowledge of a speaker's interlanguage and the process of language acquisition.Item Open Access Argeologiese beeldsemiotiek en skilderkuns(University of the Free State, 2000) Visagie, JohannEnglish: This article derives from what was originally a methodological model for the figurative analysis (in terms of images, metaphors, symbols, etc) of discourses, not simply with reference to their supposed origin but also by highlighting the "archaeological" function chat such figures may have in their own right: structuring the way we observe, conceptualise and reflect on things. The aim of the investigation is to establish whether such an image archaeology, where "image" is an umbrella-term for a certain set of tropes, can provide perspectives useful for the kind of analysis practiced by art historians. The result is a proposed network of complexly interrelated images, within which a painting originates and exists for the viewer.Item Open Access Emosionele intelligensie en akademiese sukses: 'n empiriese vergelyking tussen presterende en nie-presterende studente(University of the Free State, 2000) Stuart, Anita; De Korte, AnnemariEnglish: The aim of the study was to determine whether certain aspects of emotional intelligence account for students' academic success or failure. An Emotional Intelligence Battery comprising five measuring instruments was compiled. The experimental group comprised 133 students in the age group 18 to 23 who were enrolled for the Psychology 1 course at the Rand Afrikaans University. The results of Hotelling's T2-test indicated that the Emotional Intelligence Battery did indeed differentiate between the two groups. Statistically significant differences were found in the vectors of the means of the two groups with respect to the five sub-scales of the battery taken together and in respect of two subscales. Stepwise discriminant analysis indicated that the Social Translations sub-scale of the Four Factor Tests of Social Intelligence and the Adolescent Self-Concept Scale contributed towards the discrimination of the two groups. All in all, 64.8% of the experimental subjects were correctly classified by the two variables.Item Open Access Decentralisation or recentralisation: international lessons for South Africa(University of the Free State, 2000) Kroukamp, HendriEnglish: Decentralisation is seen as an approach that will enhance the quality and the effectiveness of public administration. However, although in the recent decades developed and developing countries have shown this tendency towards decentralisation, the present inditacions are that some governments are retracting these efforts and prudent steps are being taken towards recentralisation. What was regarded as the major advantages of decentralisation are nowadays disputed issues. In this article decentralisation as applied in South Africa will be evaluated in the light of international tendencies and recommendations made regarding prerequisites for an effective decentralised system of governance.Item Open Access Exposure to violence and posttraumatic stress disorder in a rural adult population in South Africa(University of the Free State, 2000) Peltzer, KarelEnglish: The purpose of the study is to identify exposure to violence and its consequences for health in an adult community in rural South African. The instruments used for the interviews included a 24-item Exposure-to-Violence checklist, a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) interview schedule, and the Self-Reporting questionnaire (SRQ-20). The sample included 132 adults: 48 (35%) males and 84 (65%) females in cheage range of 19-74 (mean age 33, SD=14,3). Fifty-seven (41%) reported that they had undergone a traumatic experience during their lifetime. Eleven (8%) adults were classified as having a PTSD. With increased exposure co violence, the PTSD score increased but the SRQ score (indicative of minor psychiatric morbidity) did not.Item Open Access A theoretical perspective on the societal significance of religion in South Africa(University of the Free State, 2000) Muller, HansEnglish: It is assumed that modernity is a factor inducing change in contemporary South Africa. This assumption is explained in terms of a characterisadon of recent social, political and economic changes. The theoretical perspective developed is based on the systems theory ofNiklas Luhmann but also incorporates a substantial critique of this theory by Ji.irgen Habermas. The societal significance of religion is considered in terms of three dimensions of religion in society. The focus of the article is the theoretical articulation of this three-dimensional model in terms of the possible societal significance of religion in contemporary South Africa.
